Textiles that blend natural cotton with more environmentally friendly fibers are in fashion’s future. Eco clothing will assume a growing place among organic products.
America loves the feel and look of natural cotton. No wonder Tonia Cook Kimbrough declared, “Cotton is the single best-selling fiber in America today” (Wearables, Oct. 2008, p. 29). Cotton fabric
- breathes,
- feels soft to touch,
- can be dyed into a rainbow of colors,
- wicks away sweat,
- dries quickly, and
- is a snap to wash and iron (or even air dry with few wrinkles) without any advanced technology or chemicals.
What looks more summery than a pristine white cotton dress? Snowy white shorts or slacks are a perennially fashionable for warm weather. A white cotton knit T-shirt or T-dress is a summer fashion must.
Cotton is a go-everywhere fabric. We dress it down in plain cotton knit underwear. We dress up natural cotton fabric with embroidered pique and eyelet. Many of today’s brides prefer cotton wedding dresses, adding these very special gowns to summer fashion favorites.
The whole world loves cotton, and so do hundreds of insects, bacteria, and viruses, according to Encyclopedia Online. It requires 11 percent of all the pesticides used in the world to produce cotton crops globally. Yet, cotton accounts for just 2.4 percent of cultivated land, according to the Sustainable Cotton organization. Environmental Protection Agency figures confirm this and add that seven of the 15 pesticides routinely used on cotton crops are known to cause cancer (Natural Life, July/Aug. 2007).
Cotton is a natural fiber, but natural cotton textiles are not always organic. Growing organic cotton is labor intensive, and many consumers are not willing to pay the extra price for these organic products.
One way to fulfill consumers’ love for cotton with environmentally friendly fabrics is eco clothing blends. Cotton may be mixed with bamboo, hemp, and linen to reduce the ecological costs of growing and processing cotton. The Cotton Incorporated laboratories are fabricating cotton into luxurious blends with silk and wool.
Textile World magazine (Nov./Dec.2005) reported that silk thread wrapped around a cotton fiber creates a fabric with the beauty of silk that is washable and durable. A cotton-silk suit or dress may be an ideal summer fashion.
Adding just 20% wool to cotton fabric produces a blend that has the rich texture of woolen fabric and is washable like cotton.
In summary, natural cotton has been a fabric of choice for several hundred years. The challenges of growing organic cotton ensure the future of natural cotton blended with environmentally friendly fibers. Eco clothing will become a bigger part of our fashion budgets, and alternative natural fibers will account for a growing share of the organic products clothing market.
